One Year of Wedded Bliss

Yesterday was our one year anniversary. I can't believe how quickly it's gone by...and how different things are today than they were just 365 days ago! Practically a whole new house and a baby on the way. But its been a fun, if somewhat exhausting, year and Bryan and I are closer than ever. Saying yes was the best decision I've ever made.

I started the day by getting a beautiful bouquet from my hubby that included some of the flowers we had at our wedding, red gerbera daisies (he remembered!). Then we headed out to breakfast at the Big Kitchen, a fun, delicious, divy breakfast restaurant just a block from my old apartment in South Park. We used to eat there all the time when we were dating. We hadn't been back in over a year so it was fun to go back and see the old 'hood. Then we headed over to Balboa Park and I took Bryan to my favorite museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA). We spent about 45 minutes going through the exhibits and gift shop. I love that place! And finally we just wandered around the park and took pics. That park is so beautiful. I can't wait to get zoo passes and bring our little girl to see the animals. After the park we headed over to Guitar Center to check out some drum cases (I'm paying for part of them as an anniversary/birthday gift) for the drum kit Bryan got from Pinch last year.

We got home fairly early and spent the rest of the day watching football and enjoying our new kitchen. Except for the Charger's loss (grrrrrrrr!), we had a great 1-year anniversary. We're heading to Palm Springs this weekend for an anniversary/birthday/pre-baby celebration. Thanks for the use of your timeshare Aunt Karen and Uncle Don!

My beautiful anniversary flowers.

Nursery Preview

Just a quick post to show off the wall decals I bought for the baby's room. I got these from Wee Gallery at blik graphics. They've got some great stuff if anyone wants to check it out http://www.whatisblik.com/

The room will be sage green, black and white. My mom is making the window valance and the crib skirt and Ian and Nicole are decorating the name letters for the wall. I will obviously post pictures when it's all done.

We have a kitchen!!!!

Yes, our kitchen is done! Well almost. They have one or two little finishes to do today and then we have to load all our stuff into the cabinets, but basically it's completed. We LOVE it! It looks better than we thought it would. Our 70's kitchen has now entered the 21st century. Here are the comparison shots.

Before

After

Our contractor, Remcon, started work on Tuesday, October 21 and they should be done today, November 20; just under 5 weeks to demolish, plumb, change the electricity, install new cabinets, appliances, countertops and flooring, re-drywall and paint. Not too bad! I'd heard so many horror stories about contractors being late that I was a little nervous that this wouldn't be done before baby's arrival. But I am very pleased! They did great work and we couldn't be happier. Very professional.

The planning process almost took longer than the constrcution. We started by picking out Ikea cabinets. A neighbor of ours used them in his place and we were impressed. We didn't want anything too ornate and Ikea had simple, modern designs that fit perfectly into our 922 sq. ft. condo. Remcon was referred to us by Ikea and from there we chose our Cesarstone countertops (like Silestone from Home Depot) and our flooring from Arizona Tile. We had saved some Home Depot gift certificates from our reception in May and purchased our appliances (range and dishwasher) with those (THANKS!). Bryan is very happy to have a convection oven and five burners to help create his culinary masterpieces. As the one who cleans up, I am very happy to have a quiet dishwasher and a flat stovetop (no more scrubbing under burners). While I love everything about it, I think my favorite part is that we can now see into the living room from the kitchen. We cut half of the hallway wall and created a little bar area between the two rooms. It makes everything feel more open and bigger somehow. No more cave kitchen! Along with the help of Remcon, it was all designed by Bryan on the Ikea software you can find on their Web site. Even with cutting the wall I don't think we lost too much cupboard space. We used lazy susans for both bottom corner cabinets and added cabinets above the sink. We'll see how it goes when we start loading up our dishes.

The work wasn't too disruptive...at first. There was always a lot of dust and we had the dining room table in the living room but really, it was bearable. That is, until they moved the refrigerator into the living room so that they could install the tile. That's when we started to feel a little cramped. By then we were also sick of eating out. There are only so many Rubio's fish tacos a girl can eat. Tonight is the first night we will able to skip the fastfood and cook for ourselves. We're so excited!

Here are some more pictures of before and after for your enjoyment. We flipped the stove to the other side and put the frig and pantry on the back wall.

And some more pics of the work in progress.

And in baby news...

My mom and my sister threw me an amazing shower on Sunday! I will tell you all more about that when some people send me the pictures (you know who you are :- ), but basically our friends and family spoiled us rotten and a good time was had by all.

Here's my 31-week belly shot from this morning. Only 9 weeks left! We're in the single digits. Scary. Now that the kitchen is done it's time to start turning the office into a nursery. It's never ending...

Back to baby

We had our 30-week ultrasound this morning. At my 18-week ultrasound they found that the placenta was low-lying so they scheduled a 2nd ultrasound to make sure it had moved. If it hadn't, then I would need to schedule a c-section instead of waiting to go into labor. Fortunately it has moved and all looks good with our little girl! Yes, it's still a girl.

It was great to get another little peak at her. She's measuring about 3lbs 15oz and her heartbeat was 152 bpm, which is all within normal range. She's already turned head down and her little hands were moving around in front of her face. This picture is only a photo of the ultrasound shot so its kind of blurry. I'll try to get a better scan at home tonight. She looked so cute on the screen! I can't wait to meet her.

She's been kicking the heck out of me lately. I think she just turned head down in the last few days because I've been feeling more kicks above my bellybutton since about Wednesday. They were much lower before that. I expect to start getting kicked in the ribs any day now. I'm able to feel her head and her arms and legs from the outside too. Sometimes my belly gets really distorted and then it'll ripple as she turns around. It's soooooo weird! And it can hurt too. But I love it anyway.

There's no doubt I'm pregnant these days. People on the street, in stores, and in elevators have started asking me when I'm due. I wouldn't think they'd do that unless they were positive I was pregnant. I've considered looking at them with a straight face and saying "what do you mean?", but that would be cruel. I've been a little more uncomfortable lately too. Bryan has to help me get up off the couch or out of bed and I get out-of-breath just walking to the bathroom (which I did every 15 minutes between 8:30 and 9:30 last night). I've also noticed some swelling in my ankles since yesterday. I've been making an effort to put my feet up as often as possible. Don't want to get those horrible pregnancy cankles.

Obama and Madonna

What an exciting week it's been! First an historic election and then my first ever stadium concert, actually both on the same day. I started the week by attending a "Get Out the Vote" rally on my lunch break Monday afternoon. I'd never been to a rally but when I got the call from the Democratic Party and found out it was two blocks from my office I just couldn't resist. I grabbed some co-workers and we headed down there around noon. There weren't as many people as I expected (I was picturing those mob crowds Barack always gets) but I think the crowd reached about 75-100 by the end. We were given signs and stickers and then gathered around the five TV news cameras that were there. About five or six local Democratic politicians were on hand to speak and they really worked the crowd. We had to cheer pretty loud and even started a few chants of "Yes. We. Can." and "O-BAM-A". It felt kinda silly but it was fun and the crowd got pretty excited. Now I can say I've been to a political rally. We even made the evening news. I didn't see it but another one of my co-workers caught me and Amy on KUSI. Hope I didn't look too stupid.

The next day, election day, started pretty bad. We woke up to heavy rain for San Diego. I wanted to get to the polls as soon as they opened so that I wouldn't be too late for work. I ended up standing in the rain for about 1/2 an hour while I waited to cast my ballot. It was crowded. Bryan voted for the first time by mail (I'm so proud!) and came with me to drop off his ballot but didn't have to stand in line. I usually like the whole process of going to the polls and getting my "I Voted" sticker but might consider the mail-in thing next time around. The drive to work afterward took about an hour (it's usually 1/2 an hour max) and I was totally frustrated and exhausted by the time I got in. But at least I'd had a chance to cast my vote.

About 7-8 months ago Mary, Whiteny, Kristine and I decided to spend election night seeing Madonna, who was preforming at Petco Park that night. We'd had the tickets for so long I'd almost forgotten about it. We figured it would be a fun distraction from nervously watching the election results roll in on CNN (we'd been so bitterly disappointed the last two elections...). But in support of our favorite candidate we decided to all wear Obama shirts to show our solidarity.

Me, Mary and Whitney in our Obama gear before the concert.

After a full day of work we went across the street to Stout for dinner and some election viewing before the concert. They had MSNBC on and we got to see the some of the early state results so we were pretty optimistic when we walked down to Petco Park. The lines to get in were huge! I'm not sure how many people were there but it was pretty packed; the whole field was covered in seats and it looked like every section in the stadium seating was full too. Fortunately the rain had stopped but it was still chilly. We found our seats and Mary started getting texts from everyone with election reults. Just after 8:00 we got the text we'd been waiting for: THEY CALLED THE RACE FOR BARACK OBAMA!!! Much cheering ensued. I couldn't stop smiling! Everyone in the stadium kept turing around saying "Did you hear?". It was so exciting to be out on election night and celebrate with a bunch of strangers who were just as happy as me to have a new president. Of course, the only McCain supporters in the entire stadium were sitting in the seats in front of us and kinda put a damper on our celebration but not much.

Madonna finally came on stage about 9:00 and for the next two hours put on one of the best shows/spectacles I've ever seen. It was amazing! She, of course, started out by announcing the new president and she was as excited as the rest of us. She played a bunch of her new stuff but also did some classics like "Vogue", "Into the Groove" (one of my favs) and a rockin' version of "Borderline". I'd never been to a huge stadium show like it before. Yes, I've been to a million concerts, but this one was more like a Broadway show than a concert. There were at least five costume changes, huge video screens, dancers, jump ropes, a gypsy band and, at one point, an old-fashoioned Rolls Royce on stage. We all danced (including the baby, who was really on the move that night) and sang at the top of our lungs. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen and definitely worth the $120 I paid for the tickets. Here are some of the highlights (not from my camera though...sorry they're so small but you get the idea.)

She played for a full two hours and looked absolutely incredible. I was exhausted by the end. We got back to our cars around midnight, I got home around 12:30 and went to bed by 1:00. Consequently I spent the next two days trying to recover. I just can't overdo while I'm pregnant. I slept until 11:30 the next morning, even through the construction noise going on in the kitchen (which is looking great by the way).

We woke up the next day to discover that Prop. 8 had passed, which was really disappointing for both of us. Bryan was particularly upset about it. Having had my candidates not win in past elections, I was used to the disappointment but Bryan took it pretty hard. I was just so happy and proud that our country had voted in the first African-American president that I couldn't be too upset. And it's not just that he's Africa-American. I think Obama is exactly what this country needs now. Hope, change and unity. I can't wait to see what happens in the next four years. Of course, a cynical friend of mine said "Now it's our turn to f-up the country." Let's hope she's wrong.

Get out and vote!!!!

I'm wearing my "I Voted" sticker proudly this morning. I had to stand in line for 1/2 an hour, in the rain, to fill out my ballot this morning. Then it took me over an hour to drive in to work afterward. Feels more significant since it was so difficult to cast my ballot. No matter who you vote for or how you vote, this is an historic election. So get out there and vote!!!!!

Halloween #2

Halloween at the Moore house was very chaotic this year. They had three parties that day; two neighborhood parties and a birthday party. Plus the trick-or-treating. I went with them to one of the neighborhood parties and then hung out at their house to hand out candy while Randy and Tracey took the kids trick-or-treating. I was exhausted when I got home. Needless to say, the kids were a little bit hyper while I was there. I could barely get Ian and Nicole to pose for pictures in their costumes. Here's what I could get outta them. Ian was a Clone Trooper (Star Wars) and Nicole was Tinkerbell. It was still fun to hang out and enjoy the kids. Can't wait until next year when I get a little trick-or-treater of my own.

Too much candy.

The Damned

We had one more event this weekend. The Damned were in town. As some of you know, Bryan is a HUGE fan on the British punk band, The Damned. He met the drummer, Pinch, a few years ago and has helped the band with visas and IRS stuff for their last two American tours. Consequently he gets free tickets and special backstage privleges when they are in town. Bryan took Thursday and Friday off last week so that he and his friend Dave could go to the shows in Orange County and LA. They were in San Diego on Saturday night at the House of Blues. Tony and Shelli were in town and joined us for the festivities. Randy came along too. We had a great time and Randy and Bryan even got to sing with band on stage during "Smash it Up". Our little girl was moving all over the place once the band came on stage. Bryan is very proud that his daughter will be a Damned fan too. Unfortunately I don't have pics because I forgot to take the camera (not to mention the tickets) but here's one of Bryan and I before the show. http://www.officialdamned.com/
